The Institut für Kurdische Studien presents a detailed grammar of Central Kurdish (Soranî). After our dictionaries “Kurdisch-Deutsch” and “Deutsch-Kurdisch” already comprehensively treated the field of lexicology, this gives interested people in the German-speaking area a corresponding standard work on the grammar of Central Kurdish (Soranî).

This Kurdish grammar should help to promote and stimulate communication beyond the borders of one’s own culture. Overcoming language barriers, on the one hand, and enabling deeper understanding, on the other, are central concerns of all publications of the Institut für Kurdische Studien.

The grammar begins with an introduction to phonemes and their representation in the Kurdish-Arabic and Kurdish-Latin scripts. Then the following chapters are covered: Substantiv, Pronomen, Adjektiv, Adverb, Präposition and Zirkumposition. The Central Kurdish verb is presented in particular detail in all its forms, with numerous tables illustrating how it is conjugated. This is followed by chapters on numerals, syntax, and nominative word formation. The grammar concludes with an alphabetical list of the most important verbs, supplemented by example sentences, and with extensive conjugation tables, in which various verb types are once again conjugated with examples in all tenses, as well as in negations. An index and a detailed translating glossary of Kurdish-German/German-Kurdish words complete the book.

The work is aimed at all those who are well-versed in German, interested in the Kurdish language, and want access to a grammar that is as complete as it is compact; it is especially aimed at students, but also academic staff. In order to facilitate work with the book in self-study, great attention has been paid to illustrating all presented rules with many example sentences. Color-coded boxes help to quickly memorize the formation of individual forms.

As in all publications of the Institut für Kurdische Studien, not only the modified Kurdish-Arabic script is used, but also the Kurdish-Latin alphabet throughout. This is intended to reach as wide a circle of users as possible. In particular, we hope that the upcoming generation of Kurds across all dialectal boundaries will benefit from this work.
